I used to hate eating breakfast. This was mainly due to the fact that I used to sleep in until the last minute before I had to goto work. Over the last few years I have been waking up at 6am in the winter and earlier in the summer.
Since I usually get up and workout first thing my stomach is grumbling about 7:30am or so. I can eat just about anything in the morning, but I like to have a smoothie, the most. A smoothie allows me to get a lot of things I should be eating everyday into one meal.
As I am getting older I need to pay attention to what I am eating. This keeps me feeling good and makes my doctor happy with my blood work. Important things I like are oats, flax seed, ginger, greens, and more.
One problem I have had over the years with various smoothie concoctions is that they end up looking brown and not appetizing. To counter this I started putting raw beets in and the color looks delicious regardless of what else I put in the smoothie. Then I found out that beets are super great for you so double bonus!
Here is my current morning smoothie recipe:
- 1 cup oats – uncooked
- 2 tablespoons ground flax seed
- 2 tablespoons cacao
- 5 dates
- 1 tablespoon piece of raw ginger
- 1 banana
- 1 carrot
- 1 medium beet
- 1/2 cup frozen spinach
- 3 teaspoons apple cider vinegar
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- 1/4 cup blueberries
- 3 to 4 cups of water
Put everything in to a blender and blend until smooth. I used to have a not-a-vitamix blender and it died. Then I got a vitamix about 10 years ago and it is still going strong.
Yes, this creates a lot of smoothie and yes I drink all of it myself. I read once that you should have your smoothie with a straw to avoid wearing out the enamel on your teeth due to the acid in the smoothie. This thing is the result of years of trying different combinations that I like. You may want to end up with something else, and thats great. Enjoy.

Waking up early is still kinda new to me. One key is to get to sleep earlier, which seems obvious but can be hard. I am also a night owl so I have to balance wanting to stay up and do things with getting to sleep so I can get up early and do things.
When I get up I do not look at my phone before getting out of bed. I try to get up as soon as I am awake and get going. Brush teeth put in contacts and go workout or something.
Keep your morning routine simple: get up, wash teeth, put in contacts, workout, make coffee, feed dogs, walk dogs, write blog post, make breakfast smoothie…
Prepare the night before: have your clothes laid out so you can just put them on in the morning. Fill the kettle with water so you can just hit the on button. Put your smoothie components into a bin so you can just grab the bin with everything in it at once.
